The show followed Ted as he got hired by a British football team and the impact he made. The cast of Ted Lasso has different characters who grow and become a better version of themselves, at least most of them. It was nominated for 20 PrimeTime Emmys and won seven awards. 1. Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis

Ted Lasso is an optimistic and quirky American football coach who copes with the cynicism that comes with the British. This becomes a challenge when he is hired to coach the English soccer team AFC Richmond. Jason Sudeikis is the TV series’s main character, co-creator, writer, and executive producer.  He first became a cast member of Saturday Night Live from 2005 to 2013. Towards the end of his time, Jason Sudeikis shifted to movies with different lead roles in the hit comedies We’re The Millers, Horrible Bosses, and Hall Pass.

Coming back to Ted, he is a beautifully written character because of his faults and the insecurities he has. He is an inspirational person, and the writers highlight the real-life issues he has to deal with. Some of the team members end up warming up to him, but eventually, he warms his way through the people’s hearts. 

2. Rebecca Welton, played by Hannah Waddingham

Welton is the AFC Richmond owner, and he initially hired Ted Lasso for a sabotaging act before he warmed her heart. Hannah is best known for her roles in Septa Unella from HBO’s drama Game of Thrones. She was the one who yelled Shame!, continuously as Cersei marched through the streets of Kings Landing. She also plays Sofia Marchetti in Sex Education, Mother Witch in Hocus Pocus 2, and appeared on stage in West End shows like Into The Woods and Spamalot. 

Initially, Rebecca began as the strict woman who owned AFC Richmond. Her bitterness towards her ex-husband seeped into her personality. She hired Lasso, hoping that he would ruin the club that her ex loved so much. But that’s not the case! Audiences could eventually understand how she was stony at the start, and that was solely because she was deeply hurt. She ended up lashing out at the wrong people. But once she understood what she was doing, she proved herself and became a good businesswoman, Infact, Lasso and Rebecca became friends and that had an impact on both of their lives. 

3. Roy Kent, played by Brett Goldstein

Roy Kent is a hotheaded football and is also based on Roy Keane. He is a veteran who shifted from midfielder to captain to assistant coach. Brett Goldstein plays his character and is also one of the writers of the series. Brett has also worked as a writer, co-creator, and executive producer of the Apple drama series Shrinking. He made his debut in an MCU as Hercules and in Thor: Love and Thunder. Goldstein also works as a podcast host of Films to be Buried With, where you discuss the movies that are important to them. He is also a standup comedian, giving him a dynamic personality. 

Roy was moody and didn’t shy away from putting people in their place. You will learn quickly how he is among the most popular comedy side characters. He is one of the older players at AFC Richmond, and although he is pretty angry, he never bullies anyone. Infact, he uses his intimidating personality to look out for the people who need it. With time, Roy became more accessible and was able to channel his tension somewhere else. He became a coach for a children’s team and Phoebe’s loving uncle. 

4. Keeley Jones, played by Juno Temple

Keeley Jones is a smart and confident model and is AFC Richmond’s head of marketing. Eventually, she started her PR firm. Jones is played by Juno Temple, who is known for different roles, such as the Catwoman’s accomplice in The Dark Knight Rises. She has played the role of a sex worker, Deborah Hussey, in the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass. Her other roles include Jmaie in Vinyl and Veronica Newell in Dirty John. 

5. Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt

Coach Beard is Ted’s right-hand man and is very soft-spoken. He took the center stage in season 2 in the 9th episode. The whole episode is dedicated to the bizarre night he had. While an enigma, he later understood soccer, different players, and more about his dear friend Ted. 

Brendan is also one of the writers, co-creators, and executive producers. Hunt has played different roles with Sudeiki, such as in We’re the Millers and Horrible Bosses 2. He also voiced Francis Perry and Travis Miles in Fallout 4. Before his role in Ted Lasso, he made guest appearances in Key and Peele, How I Met Your Mother and Community. 

6. Nathan Shelley, played by Nick Mohammad

Nate Shelley is Richmond’s previous kitman and has become an assistant coach. Towards the end of Ted Lasso’s season 2, Nate left AFC Richmond to take the job as the head coach of West Ham United. This shift made him the biggest villain in the show. Mohammad has played different roles in movies like Bridget Jones Baby, The Martian, and The Kid Who Would Be King. He has also voiced Disney’s Piglet from Winnie the Pooh. He also created the spy sitcom Intelligence and was a co-star with David Schwimmer. 

7. Jamie Tart, played by Phil Dunster

Phil Dunster plays the role of Jamie, a self-obsessed yet talented striker who left Richmond before. Before Ted Lasso, he played different roles, such as Strike Back and Lance Corporal in Sky One. He has also appeared in the biopics Judy and Megan Leavey. He also worked with Kenneth Branagh when he acted in Agatha Christie’s whodunit. 

8. Dr Sharon, played by Sarah Niles

Although Dr Sharon joined the TV series in season 2 and quickly became very important. Although she kept to herself, she was aware and skilled at her job and became a vital team member. She took her work very seriously throughout the show and never thought less of the difficulties her patients went through. She’s pretty calm and made sure that the rules were followed. 

She’s played different roles in movies or shows, such as I May Destroy You, Rocks, and Catastrophe. 

9. Higgins, played by Jeremy Swift

Higgins became a part of the crossfire with Ruper and Rebecca. Rebecca used Higgins to help her take revenge on her ex, and it quickly became a toxic work environment. He left his job, but after Rebecca’s revelation, she invited him to return and promised him a healthy working environment. He was a sweet person at the club, always there to cater or give advice to anyone around him. Higgins was on good terms with everyone but wasn’t afraid to speak, significantly to help the people in his surroundings.

Rupert was Rebecca’s ex-husband, and he indeed broke the hearts of the audience because of the way he handled his break-up. It was emotional to see how Rebecca was hurting over someone so cruel. All Rupert cared about was money and pretending to be the good guy even though he wasn’t. His new partner also found herself in the same position, proving he would never change himself or his demeaning ways. 

& More Characters: 

  • Sam, a loyal AFC Richmond member, played Toheed Jimoh. He was very respectful towards Rebecca during the time that they were together. 
  • Trent, played by James Lance: He is a self-obsessed journalist but is moved by how AFC Richmond was managed. He was surprised by the coaching methods used by Ted Lasso.
